Coltsfoot Compositae TUSSILAGO FARFARA (kuan dong hua)

Coltsfoot has a flowering stem with star-like, yellow flowers and broad green leaves. It originated in Europe and Asia and now grows extensively in North America.

Coltsfoot History

Coltsfoot's botanical name Tussilago farfara indicates its usage, tussive meaning cough and farfara, to go. In other words, dispels coughs. Another name was Filius ante patrem or "the son before the father," as the flowers appear first, then die off before the leaves grow. The herb has long been used as a symbol of herbal health and enjoys an old reputation as a herb that can be used for lung problems, including asthma and coughs, being included in a mixture of herbs, which was smoked. Sticks of coltsfoot rock are still sold for the support for coughs. In China the flowers are preferred, while in Europe the leaves are used exclusively since it is thought there is a higher proportion of toxic constituents in the flowers.

Coltsfoot, also called Horsehoof, Butterbur, Donnhove, and Coughwort, is a traditional herbal supportive employed around the world in supporting coughs and respiratory problems. It is native to Europe, North America, and most of Asia. Made from the flowers and hoof-shaped leaves of the plant Tussilago farfara, Coltsfoot has been employed by traditional herbalists in the form of a tea to help support the persistent cough, silicosis, and emphysema.

Other practitioners have used the herb in blends intended to be ingested to help support coughs, though the logic behind this use is highly questionable, and could lead to more respiratory irritation. It is often used in combination with Horehound or Marshmallow as a cough supportive.

Coltsfoot has a long history of use as an effective cough suppresants and it can still be used to help support mouth and throat inflammation, asthma, coughs and other respiratory ailments. Coltsfoot is no longer very popular because it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Flower heads and roots are no longer used.

Coltsfoot
Tussilago farfara L.

Family: Asteraceae.

Other Names: Pas d'âne, tussilage (French); Huflattich (German); farfaro (Italian) farfara (Spanish).

Description: Coltsfoot is a small perennial herb with distinctive heart-shaped leaves that are bright green above and silvery below due to a felt-like layer of white hairs. Bright yellow flower heads are produced on scaly stalks in early spring, before the leaves emerge.

Origin: Asia, Europe and North Africa. The raw material is wild-harvested in eastern and southeastern Europe.

Parts Used: Mainly the dried leaves (Fasfarae folium; synon. Tussilaginis folium). In former times the dried flower heads, whole herb or roots were also used.

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant, antitussive.

Preparation and Dosage: A tea may be prepared from 0.6 - 2.5 g of dried leaves, taken three times per day. Liquid extracts and syrups are also used. Leaves and leaf extracts are included in cough teas and commercial cough preparations. Some experts argue that pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) should be completely avoided, while others consider the very low levels not to be harmful, provided the daily intake does not exceed 1 µg alkaloid and that the period of use not exceeds six weeks per year.

Active Ingredients: The cough-supporting effects are usually ascribed to mucilage, that occurs in levels of up to 10% of the dry herb. Also of interest is the presence of a sesquiterpene ester, known as tussilagone. The flower heads and leaves contain 100 µg per g (0.01% dry weight) of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides - mainly senkirkine and tussilagine but also senecionine in some sources of raw material.

Health Effects: Mucilage forms a protective layer over the inflamed mucous membranes of the throat and mouth and thereby counteracts the urge to cough. Animal studies have shown that tussilagone is a respiratory stimulant.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+ (leaf only).

Medicinal Usage

From ancient times, people have used coltsfoot as a cough and asthma supportive. The herb has been a main ingredient in cough syrups and asthma teas; the smoke has been inhaled to help support bronchial congestion since Greek and Roman times; and after the introduction of smoking from America to Europe, coltsfoot became the basic part of the herbal smoking mixtures to which asthmatics resorted for several hundred years - up to the modern discovery of antihistamines and other more effective drugs. Herbalists also applied crushed coltsfoot leaves to burns and skin ailments.

The efficacy of extracts of coltsfoot leaves and flowers, long included in cough syrups, asthma teas, and herbal smoking mixtures for asthmatics, is probably due to the mucilage in the plant, which soothes inflamed mucous membranes.

General Herb Information

People thought this plant's leaf was shaped like a colt's hoof - hence the name coltsfoot. Its universal use as a cough supportive earned it the ancient Roman name tussilago, "cough dispeller," and another of its English names, coughwort (wort is an old English word for herb). One of the very earliest of spring wildflowers to blossom, the plant does not open its distinctive, stout leaves until its bright yellow flowers have bloomed - hence the alternative name son-before-the-father.

Habitat: Damp clay ground.

Range: Introduced to North America from Europe, coltsfoot now grows wild from Newfoundland south to New Jersey and west to Minnesota.

Identitication: A perennial growing 4-20 inches high. Yellow dandelionhike flowerheads (February-June), 1 inch across, have an overall bristly appearance. The flower stalks bear brown-tipped scales The leaves are broadly heart-shaped and somewhat toothed, with downy white hairs on the underside; they have an aromatic smell and appear only after the flowers are in bloom.

Dosage: Standard infusion of one ounce of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water.

The flowers and leaves of this plant contain mucilage. Since ancient times, it has been hailed for its health uses. It is a component in many herbal supplements for coughs. An infusion of its leaves is effective in relievign coughs.

If an expectorant is needed, there are many other herbs that are just as good as coltsfoot (mullein, wild thyme, pine oil) so that it makes little sense to risk liver damage, and immunity improvement. Some of the components of Petasites species may turn out to be medically useful, but only when they can be separated and sold separately from the PAs.

General Herb Information

Coltsfoot - Son Before Father (Tussi lago farfara).

Propagation: By seed, by cuttings of underground running roots.

Nature of Plant: Flat orange flower heads appear in early spring before any of the leaves, leaves have a thin, waxy transparent covering membrane, spreading habits of plant make it a popular ground cover for waste spaces.

Spacing of Mature Plants: 6 or 8 inches apart but will wander about.

Cultural Requirements: Grows under almost any , prefers full sun.

Uses

Leaf and Flower: (Health) Cough medicine, smoked with other herbs for asthma, poultices, in sweet, glutinous infusion for bronchial catarrh; made into "coltsfoot rock," fluted light brown candy sticks flavored with oil of anise or of dill; dried leaves as tobacco substitute, main part of plant used is the leaf but flowers sometimes are added.

Medicinal Usage

Coltsfoot is a useful plant known since ancient times. The leaves and flowers are demulcent, emollient, and expectorant. The leaves have long served as a herb that can be used for pulmonary ailments like coughs, and sore throats. A decoction or infusion of one ounce of the leaves to one pint of water is medicinally effective. In Germany and Scandinavia, the dried roots have been ingested to help support coughs.

The leaves are rich in mucin and contain some inulin, tannins, a bitter glycoside, sitosterol, and other principles.

General Herb Information

The blooming of colt's foot sparks the beginning of spring and the season of the garden. It is a hardy perennial native to Europe and widely naturalized in the northeastern United States. Occasionally it has escaped from cultivation in the western United States. It should not be confused with the indigenous western colt's foot, petasites spp., though they may be used interchangeably for health purposes. One species of Petasites indigenous to Japan is used in a manner similar to Tussilago.

The emerging spring blooms of colt's foot race crocuses to christen the welcome season with color. Coltsfoot flowers appear before the leaves, often coming out in late February to mid-March. The light yellow dandelion-like flower heads appear on erect leafless stems or scapes. Each stem is covered with scale-like bracts of a brownish-pink color. The large (three-to-eight inches diameter) angular, heart-shaped leaves unfold as the last flower begins to wilt. They are coarsely toothed, of a dull green color above, and covered with a downy cotton beneath. The plant spreads by means of underground runners or stolons.

Coltsfoot is easily propagated by dividing the stolons in the spring or fall. Give it plenty of room to spread in the garden.

It likes a heavy clay soil with a fair amount of moisture and a neutral to slightly acid pH. It will do well in sun or shade and is a good plant for borders.

The leaves, flowers, and roots are useful. The slightly bitter leaves can be eaten as a green in the early spring; but once the emergence of so many delicious spring greens begins, colt's foot is best reserved as a pot herb for times when there is nothing else to eat.

The flowers can be gathered and dried in spring. They have a mild sweet fragrance even when dried.

Name

Tussilago farfara L. (Compositae), commonly called coltsfoot. Closely related species called Petasites are native to the western United States. In French, it is Tussilage, or Taconnet, or Pas-d'ane; in German, Huflattich.

Source

T. farfara is native to Europe, but is now grown in the northeastern United States. Petasites species (hybridus, formosanus) contain many of the same ingredients, and some unique ingredients, as well.

History

Coltsfoot is an ancient supportive, mentioned both by Pliny and Dioscorides. Teas made with the leaves and flowers have been used as expectorants for more than a thousand years. Even before coltsfoot was used in Europe, traditional Chinese herbalists used Kuandong Hua (Tussilago farfara L.) to help support respiratory illnesses. Extracts of Petasites hybridus L., have been used to help support digestive pain, lung issues, and urinary tract pain for nearly as long as T. Farfara.

Traditional Support Uses

Coltsfoot can be used as an expectorant and emollient. In Europe, a concoction called Alzoon, containing extracts of petasites, juniper, ferns, brunellias, and dandelions, supported with oxygen and UV-light, is sold as a herb that can be used for cachexia, abdominal pain and anemia. It is still a popular, though completely unvalidated, supportive.

Commission E Recommendations

Coltsfoot can be used to help support cough, hoarseness, oral or pharyngeal inflammation, respiratory catarrh, sore throat, and upper respiratory tract catarrh (inflammation).

Possible Effects

Coltsfoot seems to be a reasonably effective expectorant, although why that should be, no one knows for sure. Unfortunately, the leaves and flowers of this plant contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). More than 150 different PAs are recognized. Taken in sufficient doses over a long period of time, PAs cause liver damage. Specifically, they cause the linings of the veins in the liver to scar, obstructing the flow of blood through the liver, and ultimately, leading to liver failure and death. They also reduce immunity, at least in laboratory animals. In addition to PAs, Petasites species also contain several compounds that may have important medical applications. One, called Bakkenolide G, is a natural antagonist of platelet activating factor (PAF) which means it might be used to help heart health. Another compound, contained in an alcohol-based extract of Petasites, blocks the production of leukotrienes - inflammatory hormones that are thought to play a role in irritation formation.

Dosage

Traditional herbalists recommend using a tea made by steeping one ounce of leaves in one pint of boiling water. Commission E recommends a daily dose of 4.5-6 grams of drug per day; not to be used for more than 4-6 weeks per year.

The bitter, sweet leaves and flowers of coltsfoot can be used to support health for their antitussive, expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. Cotsfoot contains about 8% mucilage, including various polysaccharoids based on glucose, galactose, fructose, arabinose and xylose; inulin; flavonoids, rutin, hyperoside and isoquercetin; and finally tannin. It is most often used to help support lung complaints and coughs.

Coltsfoot is a traditional herb that can be used to help support coughs and irritating upper-respiratory problems by people throughout the world including Europe and China. It is specific for all chronic cases of emphysema and silicosis, both exhibit ing signs of persistent cough. Since these problems are often heightened upon first awakening in the morning, it is a good idea to have coltsfoot tea prepared and stored in a thermos the night before.

Coltsfoot does contain extremely small traces of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which have been found to cause liver toxicity and immunity issues. However, the amount is extremely small and it is likely that other beneficial properties of the herb counter any potential liver health problems. The amount found in the dried plant is minuscule enough (0.00-0.015%) to be disregarded as any potential threat to mendth. Nevertheless, its use has been banned in West Germany. In any case, it would be wise not to use this herb during pregnancy as these alkaloids seem to have a particularly harmful effect on the liver of fetuses and newborn infants.

Coltsfoot
Tussilago farfara
(Coughwort, Horsehoof, or Bullsfoot)

Medicinal Usage

Coltsfoot was traditionally used to help support coughs and colds, hence the botanical name Tussilago is derived from the Latin for cough. Indeed, in classical times it was smoked as a cough supportive. Gerard said that "the fume of the dried leaves taken through a funnel or tunnel, burned upon coals, effectually helpeth those that are troubled with the shortness of breath, and fetch their wind thick and often." The herb was also applied externally to soothe irritation, reduce swellings and rejuvenate skin irritations. In the form of a syrup it was recommended not only for colds, but for coughs, laryngitis and asthma. It was also taken as a tea, and in the form of lozenges.

Culinary Usage

Coltsfoot was added to salads and soups, and cooked as a vegetable. The flowers were used to make wine.

Miscellaneous

Coltsfoot, so-called because of its hoof-shaped leaves, was listed by Aelfric. During the Middle Ages it was known as filus ante patrem, or "the son before the father", because the flowers appear before the leaves. In France, a coltsfoot flower painted on a doorpost indicated an apothecary's shop. The white hairs on the underside of the leaves, scraped off and dried, were used for tinder, and also for stuffing pillows.
