• Traditionally used to help support colds and chills, coughs, infections, inflammations, sore throat and much more.
Echinacea is found in scattered patches in rich prairie soil or sandy soil from Alabama to Texas and northwestward, being most abundant in Kansas and Nebraska.

This herb grows to a height of from 2 to 3 feet, sending up a rather stout, bristly haired stem bearing thick hairy leaves from 3 to 8 inches long. The flowers, which appear from July to October, vary in color from whitish rose to pale purple. The flower heads are ornamental and consist of ray and disk flowers. The brown fruit ing heads, which develop after the flowers, are conical, stiff, and chaffy. The plant has a thick, blackish root.

Most of the actions of Echinacea can all be related to proper immune system functioning. In times of stress, in harsh environments or seasons, whenever the body is in need of reinforcement, Echinacea may supply the boost required to maintain the lines of resistance, to mend injured tissue, and to help stimulate healthy body functioning. The common cold, digestion, mild to moderate infections of all kinds are still fair game for the use of Echinacea, but the main use of the plant is to boost the immune system.

Echinacea is a traditional herbal health used to help support sore throats due to colds. The health properties of this popular herb was originally discovered by the Native Indian many years ago. The two most potent species of this plant include Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea. In all studies, Echinacea has no known toxicities, however, individuals with auto-immune issues (ie. immunity deficiency, etc.) are cautioned not to use Echinacea unless directed by a physician due to its potential immune-stimulating properties. Also, those with allergies to plants in the sunflower family should avoid taking Echinacea.

The bitter roots and leaves of echinacea (also called snakeroot, coneflower, or prairie flower) support the lungs, stomach, and liver. Echinacea has been used historically for a variety of inflammatory complaints. Biochemically, it contains an essential oil, polysaccharides, echinacoside, a triglycoside of caffeic acid derivative, in E. angustifolia and E. pallida but not in E. purpurea, echinacin and other constituents.

Echinacea and the Eclectics

Echinacea was intimately associated with the "Eclectics," the great herbal-health movement of nineteenth-century North America. Eclectic medicine, founded around the 1850s by Dr. Wooster Beach, specialized in the integration of Native herbs, naturopathic health approach and what was then the Western scientific knowledge of the day. They numbered in the thousands, highly qualified and dedicated doctors, including women (theirs was the first to admit women into the medical profession), who published numerous books and respected scientific journals. Their main college was located in Cincinnati, Ohio, where, during the Western expansion of the mid-1800s, North herbalism (perhaps all of Western herbalism) reached its highest achievement. There was the distinguished work of such esteemed doctors as King, Wellingwood, Cook, Scudder, Felter, and the greatest herbalist, John Un Lloyd, who specially crafted the many herbal Eclectic medicines that were sold to physicians and used throughout the country.

The Eclectics, especially as described in the writings of Dr. John M. Scudder, were unwittingly pointed in the direction of independently evolving a system of differential medical diagnosis that was astonishingly close to that of the thousands-of-years-old medical systems that evolved in China and India. This included the evaluation of the tongue and pulse and other diagnostic indications.

By the late 1930s, with the closing of the college in Cincinnati in 1939, they had not yet evolved the principles of complex formulations used in China and India where it was found necessary to help support complicated health problem patterns by combining herbs to work on several organic systems simultaneously. Around the turn of the century, Eclectics discovered and popularized the use of echinacea root as the sovereign anti-inflammatory supportive. Thus this most sacred health restoration herb of the Plains Indians became widely used by Eclectics until their passing. Probably if it were not for the discovery of the wonder drugs, such as penicillin, echinacea would be one of the herbs of choice for the potential to help support symptoms of all infections and inflammatory complaints.

With the increased use of, and support for, the industrial-based medicines, the Eclectics' influence faded. What survives is the Lloyd Library, probably the greatest herbal medical library in the world. Located in Cincinnati, its numerous stores contain not only all the accumulated herbal knowledge of the Eclectics, but a current catalogue of books and journals on herbal health published worldwide. It is in this place, upon the ashes of the Eclectic forebears, that the Herbalist Guild scheduled its first annual meeting in May of 1990!

Echinacea

Echinacea is the wonder herb for all acute inflammatory complaints. Generally it is mild enough so there are no side effects even after taking large doses There are paradoxical reactions experienced by a few individuals but this is usually alleviated by combining echinacea with a very small amount of licorice and ginger. Because of its mild nature, however, it should be taken in small, frequent doses every two hours and accompanied by a simple warm-liquid diet of vegetable broth and thin rice porridge.

Echinacea can work for even the most severe inflammatory complaints including boils, skin eruptions, pussy sores, venomous bites, gangrene, septicemia, poison oak and poison ivy, and any acute infections. Whenever there is pus or red inflammation in a particular area, echinacea is sure to be effective, usually within three days. Thereafter the frequent dosage described above can be tapered down to only three or four times daily for a week or two after all symptoms have disappeared.

Recent studies in Germany, where echinacea has been in constant use since the early 1930s, have established its usefulness not only for serious complaints but more acute joint pain, certain immunity issues, acts as a disinfectant and possibly even helping in the fight against immunity deficiencies.

Dosage: Of the tea, one-half cup; of the liquid extract, 10-30 drops; of the dried powder, two grams at a time. For acute complaints, every two hours; for serious complaints, three times daily.

Name

Echinaceae angustifolia DC, E. pallida (Nutt) and E. purpurea (L.), Moench (Asteraceae), commonly called the coneflower root, the narrow-leaved or purple cone flower. In French it is Rudbeckie á feuilles étroites; in German it is Kegelbiume.

Source

Along with the artichoke, Echinacea is a member of the Asteraceae family. Three different kinds of echinacea can be used to support health, but many more than that grow in the United States. The active constituents of the three species differ and, until recently, there was some confusion over their naming. It now turns out that much of the E. angustifolia grown in Europe was (and still may be) E. pallida. The roots of E. pallida can be used to stimulate the immune system, and the juice of the roots for helping support skin problems. The roots contain entirely different chemicals than are found in the flowers, and not all of the active agents have been identified.

History

Unlike many of herbal supportives, echinacea is an discovery. A physician from Nebraska first learned about its health value from Indians. Echinacea was used to help support infections of every sort, and for a variety of other complaints including irritated skin and even rattle snake bites. By the early 1900s, drug companies were selling echinacea-based products, mainly for their ability to help fight infections. When sulfa was introduced in 1930s, commercial production of echinacea essentially ceased.

Traditional Support Uses

Antiseptic, as a compress for infected wounds, as a gargle for dental abscess.

Commission E Recommendations

Echinacea can be used to help support coughs, colds, cold-like symptoms, chronic respiratory infection, skin irritations, urinary infection or inflammation, and wounds.

Possible Effects

Echinacea, taken either as fresh pressed juice or dried juice, help stimulates the immune system, causing increased production of interleukin factor (a hormone that causes cell death), two members of a class of hormones called cytokines. The exact mechanism responsible for cytokine stimulation is not known, but using echinacea activates white blood cells and helps support the increase their ability to help fight infection, even if the white blood cells come from patients with immunity deficiencies. Other components (fat soluble flavonoids like luteolin, quercetin and rutin, and water soluble components called caffeoyl derivatives) are potent free radical scavengers, capable of reducing the skin from the damage produced by intense sunlight. Results of trials done by German drugmakers (in particular the makers of a widely used echinacea formulation called Resistan™) suggest that, when taken in the early stages of a cold or other mild respiratory health concerns, echinacea shortens the duration of symptoms by as much as one third. The results of other European studies suggest that using echinacea on a regular basis might even avoid colds in the first place.

Nature's Disinfectant

One of the most popular uses of echinacea is in the support of the common cold and digestion. With its powerful disinfectant actions, echinacea will boost our natural defences over the winter months.

It was the Native Indians that discovered the rejuvenating potential of Echinacea and used it to help support symptoms of all kinds of injuries and illness. Over the years Echinacea has grown in popularity as an immune-boosting herb and is probably one of the most commonly taken health herbs in modern society.

Health Benefits

Immune-Enhancing Properties: Echinacea is known to contain many active immune-stimulating agents and essential oils and to date there have been well over 350 scientific studies looking into its chemistry. Most have confirmed that echinacea can help regenerate damaged tissue, reduce inflammation and help stimulate the body's defence mechanisms by acting directly on the white blood cells. The herb has been used successfully to help support many infections such as stomatitis.

One of the most popular uses of echinacea is in the support for the common cold and digestion. This is best achieved by using preparations made from the fresh pressed juice made from the leaves, combined with extracts obtained from the roots, since this has powerful disinfectant actions.

Controls Infection: Contrary to popular belief echinacea does not have a powerful disinfectant action when applied directly to an infected area. It would appear that its ability to control infections comes from its immune-stimulating action. However, by taking a supportive dose over the winter, echinacea appears to boost our natural defence mechanisms. This does not mean that you will be immune from all ills but you may get over them much faster.

Many people benefit from taking echinacea for a variety of medical reasons. Some claim that their joint pain is eased while others see their recurrent and persistent cold sores clear for the first time, however the overwhelming majority find it a great help for chest infections, colds and digestion.

How to Take Echinacea

The best form is a liquid extract preserved in 22 percent ethanol. Many brands are now standardized. For example, a product stating that it contains 2.4 percent of beta-1,2-fructofuranoside, is desirable when selecting an echinacea product.

In general 3/4 to 1 teaspoon (3 to 4 mL) of a liquid extract or 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (1 to 2 mL) of a fluid extract should be taken 3 times daily.

For children, give half this dose and for the very young (the under fives) consult a naturopath or herbalist.

Tablet and capsule versions are also available - follow the manufacturers' instructions at all times.

• Traditionally used to help support colds and chills, coughs, infections, inflammations, sore throat and much more.
Echinacea is perhaps the most famous Western herb for the potential to help support symptoms of inflammatory problems. Its ability to stimulate the immune system makes it a useful addition to the formula. Echinacea has shown anticarcinogenic properties.

Dosage

Ointments and semisolid preparations containing at least 15 percent of the juice expressed from the flowers, have been used in Europe to help support superficial and wounds. Germany's Commission E recommends that only the root extract of E. Pallida be used for internal consumption, and that only the juice of E. Purpurea be used for ointments and salves. The Commission also warns that E. pallida should not be used internally for more than 3 weeks or externally for more than 8 weeks.

Echinacea preparations and extracts are taken orally and used in supportive therapy for colds and digestion. In Germany, only E. pallida is an approved herb, not E. angustifolia.

Echinacea Pallida
Echinacea pallida (Nutt.) Nutt.

Family: Asteraceae.

Other Names: Pale purple cornflower; échinacée (French); Blasser Sonnenhut (German); rudbeckia, pigna rossa (Italian).

Description: Pale purple coneflower is a small perennial herb with short, mostly unbranched stems and nanow leaves in a basal tuft. The slender flowering stalks are up to 1 m in height, bearing a single head of flowers with pale purple, drooping, long ray florets (40-9Omm long) and white pollen. Narrow-leaved coneflower (E. angustifolia) has branched stems, slightly shorter inflorescences (up to 0.6 m), short ray florets (up to 38mm long) which are more spreading and yellow pollen. Both these species differ from E. purpurea in their long, unbranched flowering stalks borne above a very short, sparsely branched plant.

Origin: North America (central parts - not in the western or eastern regions). Echinacea angustifolia occurs in the USA and Canada; E. pallida only in the USA. Commercially grown in North America and Europe.

Parts Used: Fresh or dried roots (Echinaceae pallidae radix; Echinaceae angustifoliae radix).

Therapeutic Category: Immune stimulant.

Active Ingredient: The roots contain polysaccharides, alkylamides (echinacein), polyacetylenes (trideca-1-en-3 ,5 ,7, 9, 11-pentain, ponticaepoxide), and several caffeic acid derivates, such as echinacoside, chicoric acid and cynarin. Cynarin is unique to E. angustifolia. Traces of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (tussilagine) are present.

Health Effects: The immune stimulant effects are mainly derived from in vitro experiments with limnune cells, showing increased mobility and phagocytosis. The drug also exhibits anti-inflammatory, disinfectant properties. All the various compounds in the roots seem to contribute to the overall effect. Controlled clinical studies with patients suffering from coughs and colds have shown efficacy for the stated indications; the duration of illness was significantly shortened.

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 6; WHO 1; clinical trials+.

Prepartion and Dosage: A daily dose of 900 mg of the powdered root (or equivalent doses in the form of a liquid extracts and dried extracts) is recommended.

• Traditionally used to help support colds and chills, coughs, infections, inflammations, sore throat and much more.

Garlic is included in this blend for its natural disinfectant properties and it ability to bring down a fever.

Hawthorn is a key herb in the maintenance and support of the heart and is beneficial for cases of rheumatic fever since this condition often involves inflammation of the heart. Hawthorn increases blood flow to the heart, can increase heart muscle performance and helps support the increase the heart's tolerance to oxygen deficiency.

Feverfew, as its name implies, helps to bring down a fever and also offers some anti-inflammatory properties.

Echinacea and goldenseal are often paired up as an herbal defense against fevers; they also boost a suppressed immune system to help support complaints such as rheumatic fever.

• Supports colds and chills, coughs, infections, inflammations, sore throat and much more.
Medicinal Usage

Echinacea preparations have been used to help support gangrene, boils, carbuncles, abcesses, mucous membrane inflammations, typhoids, burns, wounds, diphtheria, blood poisoning, mouth irritations, and other ailments related to blood complaints. Its effects are considered antithermic, depurative, alterative, and antiseptic.

Two polysaccharides which stimulate the immune system have been isolated from E. purpurea. One, echinacin B, has strong wound-mending and infection-fighting capacities because of the formation of a hyaluronic acid polysaccharide complex that helps neutralize inflammation and swelling enhanced by the enzyme hyaluronidase. Hyaluronic acid, found in the ground substance (the material which occupies spaces between cells) of connective tissue, acts as a binding and protective agent.

Echinacea extracts increase disinfecting cells (phagocytes), inhibit inflammation and accelerate wound repairing. Experiments with Echinacea essential oil also suggest healthy immunity level support. Echinacea research shows that this herb might also be used to help support digestion, and allergies.

E. angustifolia contains an essential oil, a sesquiterpene, betaine, inulin, glucose, fructose, and other substances. E. purpurea contains an essential oil, tannin, inulin, vitamin C, and enzymes. Two glycozides possessing mild antibiotic activity have been isolated from echinacea species.

Preparations include a decoction of the root plus a liquid extract made by adding one part, by weight, of the root to two parts of a mixture of equal volumes of ethyl alcohol and distilled water. Doses of the liquid extract range from five to sixty drops in a little water taken four times a day.

In Europe numerous lotions and creams containing Echinacea are sold to help fight swelling and inflammation and promote the rejuvenating of sores. An extract, echinacin, can be used to help support chronic inflammations.

General Herb Information

The genus Echinacea is represented by nine species and two varieties indigenous to North America, with distribution centered in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. These coarse perennial herbs occur in rocky prairies, barrens, glades, fields, along railroad tracks and roadsides, and, in the case of E. purpurea, in open woods.

Echinacea grow from one to four feet high with erect, simple or branched stems. Most species have rough, bristly, stiff hairs on the stems and leaves. The simple alternate leaves are oval to lance-shaped with relatively long petioles (leaf stalks) at the base of the plant. The leaves become progressively smaller and sessile (without leaf stalks) toward the flower head. The leaves are entire or have coarse teeth. The cone-shaped flower head or hemispherical receptacle with radiating ray florets ranging in color from rose, pink, purple, white, and yellow, characterize the plant. Disk flowers range from brownish-orange to reddish-brown. The ray florets are drooping (reflexed), especially in E. pallida. Flowering begins as early as mid-May in the South, extending into October in the northern limits of its range. The fibrous, horizontal or vertical root-stocks, pungently aromatic with a bitter flavor, are six to twenty-four inches in length. Several rosettes of leaf and flower stalks may arise from a single root.

E. pallida, E. purpurea and E. angustifolia are the most common species. K. pallida has long, slender, entire leaves, five to twenty times longer than broad. The purple, pink, or white ray flowers are 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches long and drooping. The plant stands sixteen to thirty-six inches tall and ranges from Michigan to Nebraska, south to Georgia, and west to Texas.

E. angustifolia is the species listed in most herb catalogs and books, though much of the root on the market tends to be E. pallida and E. purpurea. E. angustifolio is smaller than other Echinacea species, growing from six to twenty inches high. The ray flowers are as long or shorter than the width of the disk (seven-eighths to one and one-half inches long). The stiff hairs on the plant appear swollen at their bases. It grows from Minnesota to Saskatchewan, south to Oklahoma and Texas.

E. purpurea grows from two to four feet (rarely six feet) tall. Its leaves are oval with acutely pointed tips and coarse teeth. Ray flowers are rose to deep purple. This species is the most widely distributed, ranging from Georgia west to Oklahoma, north to Michigan and Ohio. The seed of this species is widely available on the horticultural trade, sometimes known as Rudbeckia purpurea. Several hybrids are offered including 'The King', 'Sombrero', and 'Bright Star'. German seedsmen offer variants known as 'Alba', 'White Prince', 'White Lustre' and 'White King'. An English cultivar with heads six to seven inches across is sold under the name `New Colewall Strain.' Ronald McGregor, author of the Taxonomy of the Genus Echinacea, reports that all these variants have been observed in natural wild stands.

Unlike other "purple cone flowers", the paradox of E. paradoxa var. paradoxa lies in its yellow ray flowers and near-hairless smooth stems and leaves. Although rarely cultivated, it is a good candidate for the herb garden. However, it is quite rare, found only in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks.

Propagation is by seed or by carefully dividing branching crowns from the main rootstock in spring or fall. Echinacea seeds sprout better if stratified before germinating. This can be achieved by sowing the seeds on the surface of a sandy soil mix in an open cold frame during January. Once the weather warms in early spring the seeds readily germinate if provided moisture and sunlight. Also, they germinate easily if stratified in moist sand in a refrigerator for one month. Like many prairie plants, echinacea seeds need sunlight to germinate. Tamp the seeds into the soil mix but do not cover them. A light dusting of soil or a straw mulch will help retain moisture.

Sown from seed, they need to grow for three or four years before sizable roots can be harvested. Plants propagated by division can be harvested two years after planting.

Most echinaceas grow in poor, rocky, slightly acidic, to alkaline (pH 6 -8) well-drained soils. E. purpurea likes a moderately rich soil. All species are drought-resistant. Full sun is required, except for E. purpurea which enjoys dappled shade during hot summer months. Deep and frequent cultivation encourages healthy growth.

Harvest the roots in autumn after the plants have gone to seed. Dry in shade or under forced heat. Roots over one-half inch in diameter can be split before drying.

Echinacea was one of the most important traditional health plants of the Plains Indians. The root can be used as an antidote for all types of venomous bites and stings. A piece of the root was applied to toothaches to help support pain. The Kiowa Indians chewed the ground root slowly, swallowing the juice for sore throats and coughs. A decoction was used in steam baths so that participants could endure higher temperatures. The Sioux used the roots as a supportive for rabies. E. pallida was used to help support mumps, fever, joint pain, bad colds, mouth sores, and many other ills. Indians used echinacea to help support more than 100 types of immunity issues. Kiowa women used the bristly dried flower heads as hair combs.

Dr. John King of Cincinnati, a leading botanic physician in his day, first described the health uses of E. purpurea in the 1852 edition of his Eclectic Dispensatory. In an article in an 1887 issue of the Eclectic Medicinal Journal, Dr. King again became the first to extol the properties of E. angustifolia in print. King used the herb extensively in his private practice and found it to be useful as a way to help support his wife's immune deficiencies. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, liquid extract of echinacea became the fastest-selling medicine derived from a native plant, despite denunciations of the herb's usefulness in the Journal of the Medical Association. By the late 1920s echinacea fell into disuse as did plant drugs in general. Today both scientific and popular interest in echinacea are increasing rapidly, thus creating the threat of over-harvesting wild populations. Cultivated supplies of the root are needed.

Echinacea helps stimulate the immune system, and is especially effective against coughs and colds, yeast concerns, and inflammatory problems. Echinacea is usually taken as a capsule, extract, or liquid extract.

Echinacea is known to help support the health of cells. The polysaccharides that are present in echinacea activate phagocytes (such as white blood cells and spleen cells) stimulate the immune system. Echinacea also acts in the same manner as interferon, which is the body's own natural antiseptic compound.

Echinacea, a native of the central Great Plains of the United States and a member of the daisy family, has become an herbal best-seller, thanks to its reputation for knocking out coughs and colds; this reputation is verified by Commission E. Three of the nine species of echinacea can be used to support health, and two of those - E. pallida root and E. purpurea herb - were evaluated by the commission. Natives and others used the plant medicinally in the 19th century; but echinacea was eclipsed in North America until its popularity in Europe inspired a comeback on the cusp of the 21st century.

Potential Health Benefits

Clobbering colds and fighting coughs. Anecdotal evidence that echinacea is effective in combating chronic fatigue syndrome, and even ear infections wasn't addressed by the commission. Writers have assigned broader uses to the herb. Dr. Andrew Well, in his book Consumer Guide to Herbal Medicine, touts liquid extract of echinacea against nasal congestion, tonsillitis, and ear infections and recommends using it the day before and day after major dental work to help avoid infections. Well also recommends echinacea for travelers facing long airplane flights, with their problematic, recycled air. Recent research in Germany suggests that echinacea may be an effective fighter against yeast infections.

Scientific Evidence

Echinacea is so highly regarded that James A. Duke, Ph.D., a respected herbal researcher and writer, suggests that it could be useful for those with low immunity levels. Commission E disagrees, saying immunity deficiency patients should not use echinacea. Since the herb stimulates the autoimmune system, it could make things worse for people whose immune systems are attacking the body, among them people with immunity deficiencies. Echinacea's wound-mending properties come from the fact that it has natural disinfectant properties. Researchers believe the herb stimulates production of interferon and health-supporting T-cells. A 1984 study published in the Journal of Infection and Immunology concluded that echinacea produces formidable white blood cells (macrophages) that destroy germs. In a University of Munich study, echinacea produced 30 percent more infection-fighting T-cells than other products under review. In another German study, echinacea reduced the recurrence of vaginal yeast infections in a group of 203 women from 60 percent to 16 percent. All told, the research on echinacea is solid, extensive, and encouraging.

How to Use the Herb

Commission E recommends daily doses of liquid extract of ethanol corresponding to 900 milligrams for E. pallida. For E. purpurea, the commission recommends a daily dose of 6-9 milliliters of expressed juice, taken internally at the: first signs of illness. For external use in a salve, Commission E recommends preparations with at least 15 percent expressed juice. Some health writers recommend echinacea tea, taken 3 to 4 times per day. Andrew Well advises taking a full dose the day before an airline flight, the day of the flight, and for one or two days afterward.

Purple Coneflower

Echinacea pallida (Nutt.) Nutt.
var. angustifolia (DCJ Cronq.

English Common Names

(Narrow-leaved) (purple) coneflower, echinacea, prairie purple coneflower.

Other names applied to Echinacea species: sampson root, black sampson.

The name Echinacea comes from the Greek echinos, referring to a spiny hedgehog or a seaurchin, a reference to the spiny floral bracts of the species. The word "echinacea" may be used as a scientific plant name (the genus Echinacea), a common plant name, and the word for drug preparations from the plants. Species of Echinacea are known as "coneflowers" because of the raised, cone-like flower-heads (as in many other members of the Compositae or Asteraceae, what appear to be flowers are actually aggregates of tiny flowers). Species of two other North compositae genera, Rudbeckia and Ratibida, are also known as coneflower.

French Common Names

Apparently unavailable (the English word is employed).

Morphology

The native Canadian plants of E. pallida are usually 15 - 50 cm in height. They have stout, more or less bristly-hairy stems and lance-shaped or linear-lanceolate leaves. Attractive flowering heads appear in late surmner and autumil, with "petal" (ray flower) colors varying from whitish rose to pale purple. The phyllaries (subtending bracts) exceed the flowers in length and are spiny. In the fall, brown fruit ing heads generally produce abundant seeds. The tap root is thick and blackish.

Classification and Geography

Echinacea is a genus of about nine species of perennial herbs, native to open woods and prairies of central and southeastern US, with one species extending into Canada. Native Canadian plants of Echinacea occur in southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. We follow the taxonomy of A. Cronquist in recognizing the Canadian plants as an element of a polymorphic, widespread species, E. pallida (Nutt.) Nutt. (note map). The Canadian plants belong to var. angustifolia (DC.) Cronq., (known as the species E. angustifolia in almost all biological literature). This has yellow pollen, whereas var. pallida (called E. pallida in almost all biological literature), has white pollen, and is not native to Canada. The species is native throughout the prairie region as far south as Texas. Introduced populations have been established in eastern North America including parts of Ontario. Both varieties can be used to support health but var. pallida, known as pale-flowered echinacea, is considered much less desirable commercially. Echinacea tenesseensis (Beadle) Small is very closely related to E. pallida, and has sometimes been considered to be a component of the latter species. This endangered endemic is found only in a few populations on limestone glades near Nashville, Tennessee (see map). Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, a species of east-central US, is second only to E. pallida var. angustifolia as a medicinal source of echinacea.

Echinacea products have commonly been adulterated, and recently several manufacturers have made efforts to ensure that their product is genuine. Much research that has been conducted on echinacea is open to question because the classification of the group was not understood by the researchers and their identifications of material utilized were incorrect. There is a need to carry out rigorous chemical, clinical and scientific studies with the help of taxonomists.

Ecology

In Canada, E. pallida typically occurs on prairie slopes. Like other coneflowers, it grows best in a sunny location, in fertile, well-drained soil.

Medicinal Uses

The root is the predominant part of the plant used for health benefits, but flowers and sometimes leaves are also employed. The chewed root causes an unusual, acrid, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Long before echinacea was considered useful for reducing the 2.4 colds per person per year typical of North America, Indians seem to have used echinacea as a herb that can be used for more ailments than any other plant. Although archeological records show that echinacea is known to have been employed by indigenous North s at least since the 1600s, European settlers appear to have taken up such use only 2 centuries ago, with the first patent medicine produced about 1870. This was named "Meyer's blood purifier" by the (German) Nebraskan lay physician H.C.F. Meyer, who created an echinacea mystique by widely publicizing his offer to allow a rattlesnake to bite him (which he never permitted) so that he could demonstrate the curative power of his miraculous medicine.

Echinacea today has become a star of the useful plant industry. Hundreds of scientific articles have been published about it, and many more non-scientific articles have extolled its virtues. As with several other herbal drugs that have become popular, there is some exaggeration concerning its benefits. Curiously, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries there was also a widespread conviction that echinacea was a useful herb that could support symptoms of many illnesses, followed by an interval up to a decade ago during which the drug was thought to be ineffective. The present resurgence of interest is very large, so much so that some consider echinacea to be the most consumed herbal product in the US.

Root extracts of the species useful for health of Echinacea have been said to have disinfectant properties, insecticidal capability, and a potential for stimulating the inunune system. There is no doubt that echinacea affects white blood cells, apparently beneficially. It has been speculated that echinacea increases the ability of the body to produce white blood cells that act as a disinfectant. Like ginseng, echinacea is often consumed not so much to help support as to help avoid illness and promote well-being.

Most scientific studies of echinacea have been carried out in Germany, the Western country which leads the world in phytomedicinal research. More than 200 echinacea preparations are marketed there, as extracts, salves, and liquid extracts for use on wounds, canker sores, throat infections, and as a potential supportive for digestion. In Canada, five products have been registered for E. pallida var. angustifolia, and one for E. purpurea.

There is considerable agreement that echinacea can be useful internally for helping support the common cold and associated complaints such as sore throat, and externally for helping support superficial wounds.

Chemistry

A wide array of constituents of echinacea may contribute to its health properties. The polysaccharides and the alkylamides are thought to be the most active ingredients. "Echinacosides" have been identified as active ingredients, but there is disagreement about their significance.

Non-medicinal Uses

Coneflowers are commonly grown in wildflower and perennial gardens, and harvested as cut flowers. Echinacea purpurea is an especially popular border plant, and there are numerous ornamental cultivars available. By contrast, there seem to be no cultivars of E. pallida; the so-called horticultural cultivar Strigosa appears to be based on the taxonomic variety strigosa of the southern US.

Agricultural and Commercial Aspects

In recent years in the US, over 50 tonnes of wild echinacea has been harvested for overseas shipment, at a time when the domestic market has been expanding. Wild E. pallida var. angustifolia has become more difficult to find, and cultivation is becomingly increasingly necessary to supply the demand so that various species or local races will not be exterminated. In Europe, Echinacea is extensively cultivated. There is scattered cultivation in Canada.

Substrate are particularly important to perennial root crops like echinacea. It thrives in well drained barns and sandy loam soils with a pH of 6 to 7, and although wild plants seem adapted to dry soils, in cultivation adequate water should be supplied. Roots are harvested at 3 or 4 years of age. Flowers may also be harvested for sale to phannacological firms, and seeds are still another saleable commodity. The cultivation of Echinacea appears to offer potential as a diversification crop in Canada, but as with other relatively undeveloped health crops, caution, planning, and self-education are necessary to make it successful. In some recent years, the prices paid to farmers for growing echinacea have been low.

The wild Canadian populations are scattered, and doubtfully justify harvesting. Furthermore they could easily become endangered. These northernmost populations of the genus are of particular significance, since they are the ecotypes suited to the Canadian environment, and therefore constitute germplasm useful for improving future Canadian crops.

Myths, Legends, Tales, Folklore, and Interesting Facts
  • The Nebraska patent medicine purveyor Dr. H.C.F. Meyer, who offered to let himself be bitten by a rattlesnake to demonstrate the curative power of his echinacea formulation, has been credited as the source of the phrase "snake-oil salesman."
  • The Meskwaki tribe of native s called Echinacea "the hairs of Grandmother Earth's head."
  • There are various ways that have been recommended to pronounce echinacea ("ek-a-NAY-sha," "ek-in-EH-sha," "EHH-key-NAY-see-ya," "e-kin-na-sha"). The famous student of botanical Latin, W.T. Steam, wrote on the subject of how to pronounce names of Latin origin "how they are pronounced really matters little provided they sound pleasant and are understood by all concerned."
  • Magnus is a cultivar of Echinacea purpurea that was chosen as plant of the year by the Perennial Plant Association. It was selected by Magnus Nilsson near Paarp, Sweden, which happens to be just across the straits from Hamlet's legendary Danish castle at Helsingor.

The cone flower makes a striking show from midsummer through to autumn when many other summer flowers have gone over. It has bold daisy-like flowers that are good for cutting for the house. The cone flower is native to central and northeastern North America growing in prairies and open woodland.

History

The name comes from the Greek echinos, meaning 'hedgehog' or 'sea urchin' because the daisy flowers have prickly centers. It has a long history among the Natives. The tribes used it to soothe stings and for insect and snakebites. A piece of fresh root was chewed to alleviate toothache. It was also used to help support coughs and colds.

Characteristics

Echinacea is a hardy vigorous upright perennial growing to 4 feet with large, daisy-like magenta or purple flower heads with a prickly orange central cone and lance-shaped leaves, sometimes toothed. It flowers from late summer through autumn. There are nine species. The three main ones are Echinacea purpurea, E. pallida, and E. angustifolia. There are some good cultivars including 'Robert Bloom', which has crimson flowers, and 'White Lustre', with snowy petals and a brown cone.

Growing Tips

Grow from seed or divide the roots in spring or autumn. E. purpurea can be sown outside. Plant in sun or dappled shade in light loamy soil.

How to Use

Health-wise,Echinacea is probably one of the most commonly used herbal extracts used today. In Germany the liquid extract is often referred to as "resistance drops," owing to the powerful immune stimulating effect of Echinacea during the winter months.

For all problems relating to infections Echinacea should be the first herb of choice.

Echinacea purpurea
Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench.

Family: Asteraceae.

Other Names: Purple coneflower; echinacée, rudbeckie poupre (French); Purpur-Sonnenhut (German); rudbeckvi rossa, echinacea (Italian).

Description: Purple coneflower is a perennial herb of up to 1 in in height, with erect, much-branched stems and broad, bristly-hairy leaves. Attractive, large, purple flower heads are borne on relatively short stalks. In E. purpurea, the flowering stalks are much shorter than the leafy part of the plant, while in E. pallida and E. angustifolia it is the other way round.

Origin: Southern and central USA. The plant is commonly cultivated in many parts of the world.

Parts Used: Fresh plant juice (pressed from the fresh, flowering aerial parts), the dried whole herb (Echinaceae purpureae herba) or root (Echinaceae purpureae radix).

Therapeutic Category: Immunostimulant.

Uses and Properties: The juice or dry herb is used in support for colds and infections of the respiratory arid urinary tract; externally to help support wounds, skin irritations, and skin inflammations.

Active Ingredients: Purple coneflower contains polysaccharides, of which two have become reasonably well known: PS I, a 4-O-methylglucurono-arabinoxylan (molecular mass 35 kilodalton), and PS II, an acid rhamnoarabinogalactan (450 kilodalton). Caffeic acid derivatives are present, such as chicoric acid (up to 2%, low or absent in other species). The plant also contains lipophilic polyacetylenes and alkylamides (mainly isobutylamides, such as echinaceine).

Health Effects: Immune stimulant properties are ascribed to the polysaccharides but the amides and caffeic acid derivatives also contribute anti-inflammatory effects in alcohol extracts. Polysaccharides are considered to be active in vivo after injection only, so that their oral efficacy has yet to be convincingly demonstrated. Wound-healing was shown using a polysaccharide fraction, echinacin B. Most of the controlled clinical studies show at least some statistically significant improvement in infections and cold symptoms.

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 6; WHO clinical studies+.

Preparation and Dosage: A daily dose of 6 - 9 mL of fresh plant juice is recommended. Preparations are also injected. Ointments and creams containing at least 15% pressed juice are used for topical applications.

Also, those with allergies to plants in the sunflower family should avoid taking Echinacea.

Goldenseal is also known by the names Yellow Root, Orange Root, Eye Root, Indian Turmeric, and Jaundice Root. Goldenseal is a native North herb that grows in the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding areas. The Cherokee Indians, who introduced it to early settlers, not only valued the root of this plant for health purposes, but also for its yellow dye which can be used as face paint, clothing dye, insect repellant and as an application to wounds. Once widely available in the wild, the plant has been largely over-harvested, and is now mostly available through commercial cultivation. The genus name, Hydrastis, is from the Greek meaning "water acting," due to the effect Goldenseal has upon mucus membrane secretions. Goldenseal contains calcium, iron, manganese, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, B-complex, and other nutrients and minerals.

Considered to be a "broad-spectrum" herb, Goldenseal is extremely popular and very much in demand. Goldenseal's numerous uses are attributed to its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It soothes irritated mucus membranes aiding the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Taken at the first signs of respiratory problems, coughs or colds, Goldenseal can help avoid further symptoms from developing. It can also be tried to help support fevers, and support congestion and excess mucous. Goldenseal cleanses and promotes healthy glandular functions by increasing bile flow and digestive enzymes, therefore, regulating healthy liver and spleen functions. It also eases inflamed peptic ailments, aids digestion and regulates constipation.

Goldenseal may be used to help support infections of the bladder and intestines as well. Its properties are largely due to its alkaloids, which include berberine, hydrastine and canadine. Because demand for the herb is high and supplies are low, Goldenseal is one of the most expensive herbs on the market.

Thyme, Thymus vulgaris L. [Fam. Lamiaceae], was traditionally used to help support coughs and catarrh (mucous) of the upper respiratory tract. The German Commission E also lists thyme leaves and oil for helping support poor digestion. In European folk tradition, thyme leaf tea can also be tried to help support nervous disorders. Experimentally, oil of thyme lowers arterial pressure, can increase heart rhythms, respiratory volume, lowers blood pressure and alleviates toothaches. The oil is strongly disinfectant, being 25 times stronger than phenol, but, in contrast, it is less injurious to the skin. Because essential oils are very toxic and irritating to the skin when applied directly, it is important to use thyme oil externally only as a wash made from the leaf tea or as part of liniment or massage oil blend. However, pure thyme oil is often used as a natural preservative for health and culinary oil blends, especially for encapsulated fish oil blends because of its antiseptic and antioxidant properties. New studies on a monoterpene found in thyme oil called limonene (found more abundantly in citrus rinds) show that it very effectively helps individuals avoid developing abnormal growths on their skin (when taken internally). Limonene also has demonstrated reduction efficacy in preclinical models of breast and colon abnormal growths. Limonene has chemo-reducer activity against rodent mammary, skin, liver, lung and upper stomach abnormal growths. Limonene also has chemotherapeutic activity against rodent mammary and pancreatic abnormal growths and is under evaluation in Phase I clinical trials with humans. Another monoterpene from thyme oil, geraniol, has also been shown to have tremendous activity in combating abnormal growths. Geraniol also has in vivo activity against abnormal white blood cells. Monoterpenes block cholesterol production within the body, which keeps excess estrogen formation and related stimulation of abnormal cell division.
