• Full bodied tea with a good flavor
• A rich, malty thickness that is delicate and delicious
Tanzania is situated on the East Coast of Africa directly south of Kenya. Ambangulu Tea Estate is in the northern part of the country close to the Kenyan border and Ngorongo Crater, a prime wildlife reserve.

Ambangulu is a fairly small estate in terms of tea plantations but extremely well managed. This has resulted in high demand for this tea on the world tea trading scene by specialty tea wholesalers and the bazaar in Pakistan.

The owners and managers of Ambangulu have been reinvesting in the estate quite heavily providing jobs and security for approximately 1500 workers and their families. In addition to this they now ship their produce in locally made - but to strict specifications - 5 ply kraft paper sacks. Traditionally, the state of Tanzania's Ambangulu Tea was shipped in paper sacks. In an effort to save trees and habitat for local fauna, the gross shipping weight has been reduced by 3000 pounds to save wear and tear on roads and vehicles. From time to time, due to hazardous road and floods, the estate is cut-off for periods up to 2 weeks, accessible only by aircraft.

Ambangulu Tea (Loose)

The tea is excellent just as we expected having previously enjoyed it immensely. It is a tea we will reorder over and over again. Thanks for offering it as it brings back fond memories of Tanzania and the Serengeti.

• Malty flavor notes in a bright golden cup
Organic tea is produced without the input of chemical fertilizers or pesticides and herbicides. Normally the yield per acre is lower that when fertilizers or others inputs are utilized, and the leaf can be slightly more mixed than non organic teas. Nevertheless with good manufacturing techniques the cup characteristics can be maintained at a high level. Such is the case with this tea.

Tanzania is a poor country and the use of pesticides and fertilizers is rare even in the Usambara region. In view of this the step to organic husbandry was fairly simple.

Tanzania is a relatively small producer of tea in world terms. The teas produced are somewhat similar to Kenyan teas in that they have malty tending fruity/flavory characteristics. The production is primarily CTC (cut, torn and curled) which produces a fuller bodied tea but a non traditional (from a specialty tea perspective) visual appearance. This tea is produced in northern Tanzania close to the Kenyan border and not far from a wild life area called The Ngorongo Crater. The soil and altitude combine to give the tea the flavor notes. An interesting and flavory tea which is perfect for afternoon tea or early morning "cuppas."
