Cranesbill Root, also known by the names Storksbill, Wild Geranium, Chocolate Flower, Crowfoot, Dove's-foot, Alum Root, Old Maid's Nightcap, and Shameface, is native to North America. It grows to about 2 feet tall with an erect stem that is unbranched, and with leaves that are deeply divided and toothed. Cranesbill has pinkish-purple flowers that grow in pairs in late Spring, giving way to a pod that is divided into five cells with a seed in each.

Cranesbill Root is a strong astringent, due to its high tannin content, and was introduced to health by the Native Indians. Knowledgeable health practitioners still can use it to help support inflammation of mucous membranes, curb irritation of hemorrhoidal tissue, and to help restore venous health. It is an especially powerful astringent for passive bleeding, as occurs in hematuria, hemotysis and menorrhagia, and has a potent rejuvenating effect on the digestive system. It has been used in supporting irritations in combination with Agrimony. Like Mullein, Cranesbill Root has been found to be an active disinfectant. Cranesbill Root was used by early Indians to help support diarrhea, dysentery, and leukorrhea, among other complaints.

Also known as wild geranium, storksbill, and alumroot, cranesbill root affects the stomach, intestines, liver, and heart with astringent, hemostatic, styptic, and vulnerary actions. This bitter and astringent root has often been prescribed for diarrhea and dysentery, digestive tract health, bleeding, and vaginal discharge. The biochemically active ingredients include tannic and gallic acids, starch, pectin, and gum.

Cranesbill is primarily a supportive for diarrhea, digestive tract health, dysentery, especially with associated bleeding. It can also be tried to help fight either internal or external bleeding and to help support burns and torn flesh. It can be topically applied and used as a douche for vaginal discharge and hemorrhoids.

Medicinal Usage

Wild geranium root was a well-known herb among native s and early settlers. The Meskwakis of the upper Midwest used the root to rejuvenate sore gums, pyorrhea, toothache, and hemmorrhoids. The root boiled in milk was a popular supportive for intestinal ailments of children. Diarrhea, dysentery and leukorrhea have all reportedly responded to help support with the root. Many have used a gargle made from the powdered root to help support canker sores. Basically, the root can be useful wherever a styptic or astringent is called for. The root contains tannins and gallic acid.

General Herb Information

A denizen of open woods and field edges from Maine to Manitoba, south to Georgia, and west to Oklahoma, this indigenous plant is a showy addition to herb gardens.

It is an erect, hardy perennial standing 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall. Long-stemmed leaves arise from the roots while short-stemmed to sessile opposite leaves grow on the main stem. They are divided into three to seven lobes with sharp teeth at the lobe's ends. The leaves are somewhat hairy and mottled with whitish-green splotches - hence the specific name maculatum (spotted). The attractive rose-purple flowers, I to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, are borne on terminal panicles. Wild geranium blooms from April to June. One form, G. maculatum f. albiflorum, has white flowers. The roots are horizontal, about one-half inch in diameter, contorted, knobby, and pinkish-gray on the interior.

Wild geranium grows from seed collected in late summer and sown in fall or the following spring. Roots may also be divided in the fall. Established plants self-sow freely. Give plants six-inch spacings.

This plant is particularly attractive when grown in colonies of six or more. It needs partial shade and good drainage and will grow in a variety of soils, tolerating a pH range of 4.5 to 7. The root gathered in autumn is the part used.

Cranesbill
Geranium maculatum L.
Geraniaceae, Geranium family.

Other Common Names: Wild geranium, Alum Root, Crowfoot, Stork's Bill, Dove's Foot, Old Maid's Night-Cap, Shameface.

Wild Geranium is found in moist, wooded areas, from Eastern Canada south to Missouri and Georgia.

This attractive woodland plant attains a height of two feet, with soft, hairy leaves palmately dissected into three- to five-toothed lobes. It is the shape of the leaves that give the plant the name crowfoot. The name dove's-foot probably originated in England where a plant of a different species than our Wild Geranium, but with similar appearance and properties is also called dove's-foot. The delicately veined, five-petaled, blushing pink to rose-purple flowers, which bloom from April to June, give the plant its name of shameface. The shape of the slightly wilted blossom, when held upside down, somewhat resembles a lady's old-fashioned sleeping bonnet and probably accounts for the name old maid's night-cap.

As spring moves into summer, the flower forms into a five-sectioned, beaked seed capsule from which the names crane's-bill and stork's-bill is derived,.

Wild Geranium is most known and valued for its astringent properties. The word "astringent" comes from the Latin astringere, "to bind fast," and refers to the ability of the substance top draw together or tighten soft organic tissue. Alum, an aluminum sulfate compound, has been tried for its astrinency. Wild Geranium, with its hig tannin content, got the name alum root from astringent properties similar to alum. However, the plant contains no appreciable amount of aluminum or sulfur, and cannot be substituted for the chemical alum and used as a mordant in vegetable dying.

Wild Geranium is recommended in combination with a small amount of cayenne pepper to tone and reactivate the weakened stomach of hard drinkers. It can also be used. as a styptic, i.e. an astringent aimed at stopping bleeding, for all kinds of hemorrhages from simple nose bleeds to piles, or for more serious internal bleeding. It is administered in the form of a liquid extract or an infusion of the root.

The rootstock is up to six inches long, bearing numerous knobs out of which smaller rootlets grow. The fact that Wild Geranium is a perennial is evident from the stem scars showing previous years' growth, and the bud forming at the base of the present year's stem. When fresh, the root is light brown externally and inside is light-colored and somewhat fleshy. When dried, it turns hard and wrinkled with a grey-purple color inside. It has been found that the tannin content in Wild Geranium is highest just before the plant flowers, so it is best gathered for herbal use in the spring rather than the fall, as is the case with most other roots.
