Tea Tree Oil is widely used in ointments and creams to help relieve pain from insect bites, wounds, abrasions, acne, skin infections, infections (including athlete's foot and thrush). It is popular in aromatherapy because it can be used directly on the skin and does not irritate mucous membranes. Dilute oil is sometimes used internally as a mouthwash in case of mucosal inflammations, such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis and nasal congestion and to help relieve symptoms from catarrh of upper respiratory tract. The oil is used as an antiseptic and preservative in cosmetic products.

Tea Tree
Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel.

Family: Myrtaceae.

Other Names: Melaleuca (French); Teebaum (German); melaleuca (Italian).

Description: A medium-sized tree with papery bark, linear leaves and white flowers resembling bottle-brushes. The long, conspicuous stamens are arranged in five bundles in each flower. Tea tree should not be confused with ordinary black tea (Camellia sinensis).

Origin: Australia (mainly New South Wales); cultivated mostly in Australia. It is said to have been a traditional medicine of the Aborigines.

Parts Used: Essential oil (Melaleucae aetheroleum), obtained from the leaves by steam distillation.

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant.

Preparation and Dosage: Pure or dilute oil is used externally, often in combination with other ingredients. Internal use should be supervised by a health care professional.

Active Ingredients: More than 60 terpenoids have been identified in the volatile oil; 1-terpinen-4-ol should constitute at least 30% of total terpenes in high quality oil. Other compounds present are alpha- and gamma-terpinene (about 40%) and 1,8-cineole (= eucalyptol; maximum of 15% in high quality oil).

Pharmacological Effects: The monoterpenes interact with biomembranes and membrane proteins thus explaining the observed disinfectant activities. A few clinical studies have shown positive results in relieving symptoms of acne and infections.

Notes: Cajuput or cajeput oil is obtained from M. leucadendra (= M. leucadendron) or M. cajuputi that occur in Australia, Malaysia and New Caledonia. It is used in aromatherapy and as an antiseptic in nose drops. Niaouli oil (obtained from M. viridiflora) contains 1,8-cineole as main ingredient (35 - 60%) and is used in aromatherapy and in proprietary medicines.

Status: Pharm.; WHO 2; clinical studies+.
