The aerial protions of chickweed, or starweed, are sweet and mildly bitter and support the lungs and stomach. Chickweed is considered to be demulcent, emollient, expectorant, antitussive, antipyretic, alterative, and vulnerary.

In terms of the biochemical makeup of chickweed, it contains saponins, which exert an anti-inflammatory action similar to cortisone but much milder and without the harmful side effects. This action has made a direct application of chickweed oil on skin rashes widely used and appreciated by herbalists.

Chickweed is used externally for skin irritations, itch, and rashes; internally, it can be used to help support weight loss, as a potherb, and a demulcent to help support a sore throat and lungs.

Chickweed is a common wayside weed with great value iin supporting blood toxicity, fevers, inflammation and other hot health issues. It is mild enough to be eaten safely as a potherb.

Its most common use is as an oil or salve applied directly to skin rashes, skin irritations and psoriasis. For this the whole fresh or dried herb is macerated in olive oil for four days. It is then squeezed out through a cloth and is ready to use.

Another traditional use for chickweed is for weight reduction. Whether this is due to any direct reduction of fat, its filling demulcent properties, its mild diuretic and laxative properties or a combination of all three would be difficult to prove.

Externally, a poultice of the steamed herb is applied to resolve boils and abscesses.

Chickweed has long been prescribed by herbalists as a tonic and for a variety of health concerns. It is high in Vitamin C and also contains other nutrients including Vitamin A, some B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

This common weed, sometimes called Starweed, can be found in almost every garden in all corners of the world. It is a low growing annual plant with tiny star-shaped white flowers. Traditionally Chickweed was harvested as a vegetable.

Herbalists recommend Chickweed for both internal and external inflammations. It is thought to be helpful for helping support urinary tract health and bladder issues. As a cream it can be applied to skin irritations, including irritated skin, insect bites, burns and scalds. Taken internally it is recommended by herbalists to help support coughs and colds by reducing mucus build-up in the lungs. Herbalists also use it as a poultice for drawing boils, abscesses and irritations. The plant is edible and can be added to salad or cooked.

Chickweed, as the name suggests, is a favorite food for domestic fowl. In Elizabethan times it was fed to caged birds and in the Middle Ages was known as "morsus gallinae", or "hen's bite". It is a common garden weed, once gathered as a vegetable to be cooked like spinach and tossed in butter or else used as a salad herb.

Soothing and astringent, chickweed's main health use is in creams and ointments for irritant skin rashes and skin irritations, or in the first-aid box for burns, boils and drawing splinters. Culpeper suggests combining chickweed with rose petals and adding various pig and sheep fats to create an extremely soothing ointment - it would certainly be a good combination, as rose petals have long been regarded as supportive for "the skin and the soul". The entire flowering chickweed plant can be made into infused oils and added to bath water to soothe skin problems. Use 10 ml of the infused oil in a warm bath.

Chickweed poultices were once a favorite for rheumatic pains, joint pain and also varicose irritations.

Although not so popular as an internal supportive, Chickweed is particularly cooling and can be worth adding to mixtures for joint pain and hot, irritant skin complaints. The leaves are a useful source of Vitamin C.

Medicinal Usage

Completely ignored by ancient herbalists chickweed received its Latin name, Stellaria, from the Swedish botanist Linnaeus, who noted the starlike shape of the delicate white flowers. The flowers open on sunny days, but they may close on rainy or cloudy days.

Historically herbalists have used chickweed to help support both internal and external inflammations. They still prescribe it today for that purpose although its effectiveness has not been scientifically proved. Claims have also been made for chickweed as an antitussive (helps support coughing), but again, these too have not been proved.

General Herb Information

How the humble herb chickweed could stir up such a storm of controversy is difficult to imagine. But some herbalists swear by this extremely common weed as a supportive for both internal and external inflammations and for colds, coughs, hemorrhoids, sore eyes, and joint pain, while others in the field dismiss chickweed as nearly worthless - distinguished only by its promiscuity as a weed. Even in the animal kingdom, opinions about chickweed vary. Chickens, hogs, and rabbits dote on its succulent, pale green foliage and tiny seeds, but it is said that sheep disdain it and even goats will not touch it.

In truth, chickweed is a useful herb. It does contain nutrients and has long been prescribed by herbalists as a tonic to restore the strength of the frail and sickly Capable of producmg five generations of offspring in a single season, chickweed invades lawns and fields to the dismay of gardeners and farmers but the delight of cooks, who relish it as an herb and an almost year-round source of salad greens.

Habitat: Gardens, lawns, meadows, pastures, fields, waste places.

Range: Native to Europe, but found throughout the temperate regions of North America.

Identification: An annual herb, chickweed grows 12-15 inches high; its sprawling, tangled stems reach up to 21/2 feet in length. From each stem node grow pairs of oval leaves that vary in size. White flowers (February-December) 1/4 inch across, with usually five two-parted petals that are shorter than the sepals, are followed by oval seed-bearing capsules.

Chickweed can be useful for joint pain, joint stiffness, lung health, and blood problems. It is considered to be effective as a tonic and for respiratory problems.

Chickweed is a long, heavily branched, creeping weed found worldwide. Its popularity with birds probably accounts for its name. The above-ground portions of the plant can be used to support health, either fresh or dried.

Chickweed is also known as Adder's Mouth, Passerina, Satin Flower, Starweed, Stitchwort, Tongue-grass, Winterweed.

Chickweed, fresh or dried, can be used mainly to help support the itchiness caused by rashes, irritated skin, haemorrhoids, varicose veins, psoriasis, inflammation, nettle burns and other skin disorders. Internally it is traditionally used against joint pain. Fresh flowering plants are used in homoeopathy against inflammation of the joints and joint pain.

Chickweed
Stellaria media (L.) Vill.

Family: Caryophyllaceae.

Other Names: Starweed; mouron blanc (French); Vogelmiere (German); stellaria (Italian).

Description: Chickweed is a small, creeping, annual herb of up to 0.1 m in height but which can spread up to 0.4 m wide under favourable . It has soft, fleshy stems bearing small, oblong leaves in opposite pairs, inconspicuous, white, star-shaped flowers and small, nodding fruits that are enclosed in persistent green calyx lobes.

Origin: Europe, North Africa, north Asia. Chickweed thrives in moist places and has become a cosmopolitan weed. It is exceptionally common and can be found in almost any garden.

Parts Used: Fresh or dried aboveground parts (Stellariae media hirba; = Herba alsines).

Therapeutic Category: Treatment of skin disorders.

Preparation and Dosage: The fresh juice, poultices, ointments or creams can be used to help support itchy skin. Decoctions of the fresh or dry herb can be taken orally to help support joint pain. The fresh herb is edible and may be cooked as a vegetable or added fresh to a salad.

Active Ingredients: Triterpene saponins, to which the itch-supporting properties are ascribed. Also present are coumarins, phytosterols, flavonoids (mainly apigenin C-glycosides, rutin), organic acids and vitamin C. The Asian species S. yunnanensis, S. dichotoma and others have yielded several cyclopeprides but these or similar compounds have nor yet been reported from S. media.

Health Effects: The efficacy of the herb in supporting itching skin is attributed to the saponins (said to be emollient and rejuvenating) but the actual mechanism of action appears to be unknown (possibly a corticomimeric activity).

Notes: Members of the family Caryophyllaceae typically produce saponins and several of them can be used to support health as secrerolytics (Gypsophila and Saponaria). Furthermore, whereas anthocyanins are normally responsible for blue and red colours of flowers, betalains take this role in the order Caryophyllales.

Status: Traditional health.

Dr. Oz weight loss - Chickweed Tea

Dr. Oz. suggested Chickweed tea as an all-day weight loss product, so I thought I'd give it a try. Found this tea at Zooscape.com. The tea I received is high quality, and has a pleasant taste. It has only been 3 days, so no out-of-the ordinary weight loss to report yet, but it will take a bit more tiem, I suspect. My experience with Zooscape.com was enjoyable and the product is what I expected.

Marigold and chickweed, often regarded as the best herbal duo to help combat skin irritations, work to help support inflammation and provide support for irritated, itchy skin. Marigold, or calendula flower, has anti-inflammatory properties making it useful for skin disorders. While chickweed may be passed off as just another common garden weed, it has earned a long-standing reputation for its ability to bring support of complaints ranging from mild dermatitis to skin irritations or stubborn psoriasis.
