Butcher's Broom
Ruscus aculeatus L.

Family: Asparagaceae.

Other Names: Petit houx (French); Stechender Mäusedorn (German); pungitopo (Italian).

Description: The plant is an evergreen perennial (up to 1 m), with peculiar leaflike, leathery branches or false leaves called phylloclades. Small, greenish flowers are borne on the phylloclades and the attractive fruits are bright red, fleshy berries.

Origin: Western Europe and Mediterranean region to western Asia; commonly grown in gardens. Butchers in Europe formerly used the branches as brooms, hence the common name.

Parts Used: Sliced and dried rhizome and root (Rusci aculeati rhizoma).

Therapeutic Category: Venotonic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic.

Preparation and Dosage: Extracts, equivalent to a daily dose of 7 - 11 mg ruscogenin, are taken orally.

Active Ingredients: The activity of the product is ascribed to steroidal saponins (up to 6% of dry weight). The main saponins are ruscin (monodesmosidic spirostane type) and ruscoside (bidesmosidic furostane type), that co-occur with the corresponding aglycones ruscogenin (1-beta-hydroxydiosgenin) and neoruscogenin.

Health Effects: Experiments have shown that extracts of butcher's broom are associated with the stimulation of the alpha-adrenengic receptors of the smooth muscle cells in the vascular wall. In this way, dilated venous vessels are supported and strengthened. Ruscogenin and related compounds are used in ointments and suppositories for the symptomatic support of pain and discomfort associated with varicose veins and acute attacks of piles. The Ruscus saponins are considered to be absorbed when taken orally and are included in combination products intended for oral use against the symptoms of venous and lymphatic vessel insufficiency.

Notes: Figwort or pilewort, Ranunculus ficaria (family Ranunculaceae) is a traditional and effective antihaemorrhoidal approach. The activity is ascribed to saponins (glycosides of hederagenin and oleanolic acid).

Status: Traditional health; Comm. E.+.

The sweet and slightly acrid herb known as butcher's broom, or kneeholly, may have been used traditionally to help support swelling of the legs and feet, urinary obstruction, urinary stones, rejuvenating fractures, and opening of the lungs. The herb is known to possess diuretic, diaphoretic, and aperient actions, and it contains ruscogenin and other saponin glycosides similar to those of wild yams.

Butcher's broom is so named because the mature branches were bundled and used as brooms by butchers. The young shoots were sometimes eaten as food. Ancient physicians used the roots as a diuretic in supporting urinary problems.

Saponins are thought to be responsible for the health actions of butcher's broom. These constituents are thought to help support the strength and tone of the veins and act as mild diuretics. They may also help lead to constriction of the veins, which helps blood return from the extremities. Butcher's broom extracts may also exert a mild anti-inflammatory effect.

Garlic is mentioned in the Bible and the Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides all mention the potential use of garlic for the support of many complaints, including bloating, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and low energy. Its use in China was first mentioned in A.D. 510. Louis Pasteur studied the disinfectant action of garlic in 1858.

The sulfur compound allicin, produced by crushing or chewing fresh garlic or by taking powdered garlic products with allicin potential, in turn produces other sulfur compounds: ajoene, allyl sulfides, and vinyldithiins. Aged garlic products lack allicin, but may have activity due to the presence of S-allylcysteine.

Garlic's cardiovascular supportive effects were illustrated in a four-year clinical trial on people 50-80 years old with atherosclerosis. It was found that consumption of 900 mg of a standardized garlic supplement helped support the reduction of arterial plaque formation by 5-18%. The benefits were most notable in women. Garlic also helps to support the inhibition of platelet stickiness (aggregation) and helps support the increase fibrinolysis, which results in a slowing of blood coagulation. It is mildly antihypertensive and may have antioxidant activity.

The classical essay on Ayurveda, Sushrita Samhita, describes the use of guggul for the support of a wide variety of complaints, including joint pain and weight gain. One of its primary indications was as a supportive for a condition known as medoroga. This ancient diagnosis is similar to the modern description of atherosclerosis. Standardized guggul extracts are approved in India for helping lower elevated serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Guggul contains resin, volatile oils, and gum. The extract isolates ketonic steroid compounds known as guggulsterones. These compounds have been shown to help support the cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering actions noted for guggul. Guggul can help support the lowering of serum triglycerides and cholesterol and LDL and VLDL cholesterols (the bad cholesterols). At the same time, it can help support the increase of levels of HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). As antioxidants, guggulsterones can help keep LDL cholesterol from oxidizing, an action which protects against atherosclerosis. Guggul has also been shown to help support the stickiness of platelets - another potential effect that can help lower the risk of coronary artery problems. One double-blind trial found guggul extract may be useful for helping lower cholesterol levels. Other clinical trials in India (using 1,500 mg of extract per day) have confirmed guggul extracts can help improve lipid levels in humans.

This powder is great for the heart and body!

My friend got me into this product after he felt better taking it. If you knew me, you would know I am the last person in the world who would be interested in natural supplements. However... The taste is ok, but I add it to juice, or even a strong café-au-lait type of coffee - 50/50 milk/coffee. This isn't specifically an energy product, but it improves my energy anyways. I don't get groggy during the days I take this. I find myself less out of breath during the day. I also find I sleep better at night, but not if I take it too close to bedtime, otherwise, I will lay awake. I think the increased energy levels during the day lead to deeper sleep at night. I also find that I crave sweet drinks less.

  works

I have been drinking Heart Formula tea for about 9 months now. I am pleased with the results. In my view, it increases energy levels and decreases fatigue. I am now able to play a full set of tennis with my daughter without getting totally winded. Even my muscle tone has improved, though I suspect this is because I feel healthier and am able to be more active now.
